A Scandi Sunday ( When sharp is too sharp )

It's a wet old Sunday here .. So aside from just listening to music , I decided to play Scandi .

I have this habit of making my scandi edges scalpel sharp . This causes a few problems .
A) To get an edge that sharp , it has to be thin
B) Thin is fragile
C) Fragile edges roll

And I have been getting a lot of rolling with my scandi edges .

Problem 1 . How sharp is sharp enough ?
Problem 2 . How do you know if the edge will roll ?

Hmmmm ,
What I decided to do was lay the edge on the strop @ around a 45 deg angle , then put as much pressure on the knife as I could while doing a stropping motion .
Just in one direction like half a dozen times ..
Then checking the other side for a roll ! Oh yeah , there was a roll .
4 knives were played with .. 2x Hultafors , that have been Scandi-fied .. My Mora Robust and my Brother 005 D2 Scandi .
Once the roll is detected one cleans the roll off .. I used a fine EZE-LAP Diamond Hone .. ( I have used these for several decades to sharpen my knives by hand )
All I wanted to do was clean the roll away .
Then hit the leather strop hard again to see if another roll could be formed ..
If another roll was detected , then clean it away with the diamond lap .
And repeat the process till the edge no longer rolls .
And that's where I am at .. So the edges should be slightly convex on all 4 knives now and the fragile / thin edge removed ?
Only one way to be sure , more slicing rope .

Brother F005 D2
Factory edge 200
Scandi ( True ) 250
Convex Scandi 150
Oh dear ! Ok , it could be as simple as Rubbish Steel ... Could be !
Honestly I can make this knife razor blade sharp .. But then the edge is thin and fragile .
Convex-ing just kills performance .. Stronger edge , but at a cost !

Brother F005 , maybe never meant to be Scandi ?
So I just put a 18 deg edge on it .
I mean , if the knife does not support an edge geometry ? It might be time to move on ...... To something else .

Next knife ? Mora Robust ?

Mora Robust ....

Ok , so I spent hours trying to do a convex edge that is hair shaving sharp .
All that effort resulted in an edge that wore out in 100 slices of rope .
Quite frankly , that is bellow average performance for any knife .
The Robust has not overly impressed me ..
And ........................... Mora Garberg ?

I'm really worried about buying a Garberg .. Cos I really don't want to shell out $200 bananas for a average knife , or heaven forbid !
A bellow average knife !
I mean , I squeezed 400 slices out of a ELK Ridge 10.5 ... A very much budget knife !
If I spend 4 times as much money on a Garberg ? Will I get 4 times as much knife ?
That's the problem with testing , the truth can be a bit of a slap in the face .

Next ......... Hultafors ...
