Bad smell....

Advice please.
I had assumed that the bad smell was from one or both of my sons, but as I followed my quite prominent nose, I discovered that I had done them a disservice and the smell was coming from the inch or so of putrefying roo liquid in the Engel with the temp reading 30 degrees.
I rinsed it out, washed with bleach, then bicarbonate and took the seals out and washed them with vinegar and bicarbonate.
the smell is slightly better and the Engel will need fixing, but if anyone has any ideas about how to neutralise the smell I would be very grateful.
If you have advice on how to deal with smelly family members at the same time....bonus!

Hey Thud,

If you have tried soaking overnight and its still there you might have to do several washes. Otherwise leaving it out in direct sunlight for a day can help. Obviously you don't want to do this too much as it will eventually damage the plastic but for a day or two would be fine.

I've done this with an old bar fridge and it helped a bit. Odours in plastic are a bugger though. I use a different fermenter for my homebrew beer to my ginger beer for this reason. Learnt that the hard way!

Thrud have you tried Vanilla extract ? its what my mum used to use and I do as well.

Soak a cotton ball in vanilla extract, then place the cotton ball inside an open-topped, small container.

Fresh ground coffee works well for getting rid of smells in a fridge.

never ending stink could be a great excuse for purchasing a bigger better fridge ... just saying

Do you leave the engel open when it isn't being used? I imagine that would fix anything, as well as minimising any bacteria (keeping things dry)

Very odd to have it fail like that, at least it will be easy to get fixed in warranty.

There are commercial products too, I have never use any of them so I don't know if they work.

Things like: Bac-A-Zap by Nisus and Odor Hunter ....

The old arm and hammer used to be advertised for fridge smells . Don’t know how extreme .
Think it was bi carb or baking soda .

And get your sons to go swimming at your favorite fishing spot - it's known as chumming. If you confused long dead roo for them, they'll probably be quite effective

I've got Vanilla essence on a plate in there, but I've just read Mozzie's post and I should be using extract. It's going to repair centre.
