Finished product. Xanthorrhoea stalk sharpened on thin end, notched at 4ft mark, 4 x o-rings added.

I chose this xanthorrhoea stalk since it's my new medium-duty hiking stick. In addition to its uses as a hiking stick, hutchie pole and GoPro "Gandalf" mount, it's now also modified for use as a tracking stick. It's just over 5ft long, so I notched it at the 4ft mark. It has two different sizes of o-ring due to the natural taper in the stalk.

Part 2 of this assessment will cover the construction of a folding scale rule.
