Ever since watching Felix, I've wanted to build a waterwheel to roast a chicken:

Construction:
The wheel and driveshaft:

Conclusion:
This was a fun project, BUT there was insufficient flow in the river to really turn the paddles, esp when loaded.
I tried to build a small rock wall to channel the water flow, but to work properly I think a "serious" constriction in the river is needed to produce enough force to turn the wheel, esp when loaded.
However I resorted the old manual spit. Or as I call it "Chicken on a stick" :

We stuffed half a lemon into the cavity, and a handful of Mountain Pepper Berry leaves.
I secured the chook with some string.
Roasted for 2 - 3 hours, manually rotating every so often as we walked past (every 5 to 10 mins I guess)
Added some corn cobs, spuds and capsicum too:

I think I can honestly say this was the Bust Chicken Ever !
Very tender and juicy with a subtle lemon and sweet peppery-ness. A hint of smoke too.
Delicious:
And after dinner, the waterwheel was finally put to good use :
