Alot of people think that the only freshwater crayfish is the Yabby in summer. Similar to the Murray Cray, Victorian waterways have a number of spiny crayfish species that are only active after the first frost in the colder months. you do not need a net to catch these critters in shallow creeks as they frequently gather on sandbanks to mate where they are easy pickings. (Bag limits Apply) and in some areas fishing for these guys are totally prohibited. Local populations are usually fiercely denied by locals especially in the smaller communities as the spiny itself is seen as more of a asset than a food source.
