what 1:25k mapping software?

So I have a Garmin inreach mini and basecamp installed. The options seem to be the oztopo v9 or garmin topo and hema maps. I want to be able to print the topographical maps out of basecamp. I'm located in WA. Its all doing my head in. Can anyone clear things up for me. Most info online is confusing or old.

Basecamp is clunky, and hard to print to a specified scale. You can choose your grid units in the options (LatLon, UTM, etc). These get printed on the borders.
Zoom in and out to fit everything onto the page(s) you want. It will print a scale, but you can't specify what scale. It just puts a scale bar on the page. Use Print Preview to check.

I use OziExplorer. Also a clunky interface, but a lot more control over scales and page sizing. Also around $130 for a one-time purchase licence.
I first bought it around 2003(?), and upgraded free of charge ever since.
I suspect there may be better software around these days. Maybe not.
Finding maps can be hard, too. For WA maps, checkout The Explorer's 25k and 50k SW series, among others. See Mapworld

I'm no expert at this, but I think there is only so much modding to the map size these apps can do due to the scale and compass calibration I think. It also considers reference points- if there are no landmarks for a certain distance and terrain it may need to make the map larger. I go to Mapworld for my hardcopy maps to use with a compass. It makes sense as a Government GIS Officer actually prepares and prints you're maps, at least in South Australia. I think that there provides some level of professionalism and security.

I also brought a Garmin Etrex 22x recently. Its basically a slight upgrade on the popular Garmin Etrex 20x (entry level unit that has pre-loaded Topo-graphic maps on it, I think). It was high time too. They are not cheap, but are a very convenient piece of equipment for serious explorers or travelers alike. I equate a GPS to a Bic lighter and a hard copy map to a fire-steel or flint, if that makes sense! A GPS is a miraculous and very convenient piece of equipment, but one has to know where one actually is on a map. I don't rely on my GPS as a soul navigation aid if I'm off the grid.
